The St. Theresa Club was organized July 15, 1926 under the guidance of Rt. Rev. Msgr. V.J. Masnicki, pastor. Sister Mary Margaret (Elizabeth Japkiewicz) and Mrs. Mary (Wrzynowska) Gorczyca headed the small group of young women under the name of the “Circle of Roses.” This name was later changed to St. Theresa Club taking as its patron, St. Theresa of Liseaux who was canonized in May 1925. The club is celebrating its ninetieth anniversary in 2016.
Since its beginning, St. Theresa Women’s Club focused on being a social club for the women of the parish. According to its constitution, “the aim of the club is to preserve the Roman Catholic Faith as well as our national heritage while instilling a spirit of unity and mutual understanding among members”. The club looks “to work for the good of the Club, the parish, and the community of Elizabeth, New Jersey.”
Candidates for membership must be of the Roman Catholic faith, 18 years old or older and must be sponsored at a meeting by a member. St. Theresa Women’s Club currently meets monthly on the first Saturday of the month.
